Contemporary dance falls under the new contemporary performing arts, and its goal is to distance itself from the formality and rigidity of classical ballet canons to return to its essential function, namely, to communicate and express. Unlike classical dance, it is an expressive form of the body based on free movements and improvisation.
The distinctive character of contemporary dance lies in the alternation between the strength of movement and release and in the importance of awareness of every gesture.
